STORY
Q: Red Faction will contain a hugely involving storyline, what are the basics behind this storyline? Will it be linear, or will the path taken depend on the outcome of an objective?
-The game takes place on Mars about 100 years in the future. Ultor Corporation runs a massive mining complex on the planet, which is where the game takes place. The player takes on the role of Parker, a miner toiling deep beneath the surface. The working and living conditions for the miners are horrible, and miners are dying from a mysterious disease known as The Plague (which only seems to affect miners, by the way). The game begins with a miner uprising sparked by Parker, which turns into a full-fledged revolt. The player takes up arms against the Ultor security forces and joins the rebellion to uncover the origins of The Plague and bring Ultor to justice. The storyline is linear, although there will be localized events that the player will be able to change. We wanted to focus our attention on creating a single compelling story without having to expend effort on branching the outcomes. top
Q: How much game time does Red Faction take to complete?
-Approximately 20-25 hours for average players on normal difficulty. Comparatively, Resident Evil was meant to be completed in under 3 hours, and the average player was intended to beat Metal Gear Solid in under six hours. top
Q: Half-Life is like Quake, but with a story line... One of the best aspects of the game is not the actual plot but the way the plot explains most of the FPS elements of the game. So, will Red Faction be designed around this idea?
-The story and levels of Red Faction are being designed to make sense within the game. Characters will be performing logical, meaningful tasks within functional areas (read, miners will be dying, a lot), objects will have real purposes within their environments, items will be found in logical places, and so on. Game action, conversations, scripted events, and your choices will advance the story. You will have a vital place in the story, but there are thousands of other people involved too (read you're Rambo, everyone else sucks). You'll hear about activities occurring in other parts of the game world (not very often, and if so not important), and you'll see the results of those events when you reach those areas (not really). We're trying very hard to create a realistic world with a strong story (with you as the hero) that tightly integrates into the game's action. Everything you see within the game should support that intent. Once you accept the premise that Red Faction is taking place in the near future on Mars, everything in the game should serve to keep you within that cozy cocoon of suspended disbelief. top
Q: If you ignore situations and come back later will you see the results?
-The scripts play out very quickly. Often times the second you get there, even if you run your ass off, the script will be pretty much played out. The other miners in the game totally suck. top
Q: Do you start with a gun? If not, how long is it until you get a gun?
-You start out empty-handed. Within five seconds of the game you'll pick up a control baton as well as a pistol. top
Q: Is Red Faction a communist game?
-No. top
Q: What can you liken the premise of Red Faction to?
-The social situation I know of that Red Faction most reminds me of is the U.S. coal industry of decades ago. The miners lived in company homes in company towns, bought food and clothing at company stores, and lived with whatever garbage the company handed out. Kids grew up in those towns and went to work in the same mines their fathers did, married in town, settled down, and worked until they died of the same Black Lung disease that killed their parents. Rinse, lather, repeat. They'd have occasional violent strikes over working and living conditions. The miners would physically attack company officials and guards, the company would call in bully boys to fight back, and the U.S. government would sometimes get involved (sending in Federal troops on the side of the mining company). top
