ANIMATION/GORE
Q: Is there more realistic character damage in Red Faction with a location-based damage system? How will the system work and approximately how many different locations will a target feature?
- Red Faction has a bone-based location based damage system. This allows us to assign damage modifiers to specific bones (e.g., the head) and allows us to play location specific death and flinch animations. By having location damage be bone specific, we can detect hits on hands, which may cause a character to drop a weapon (which never happens). A character in Red Faction has approximately 25 bones, although only major bones (about 6) result in unique death or flinch animations. top
Q: Is there real-time skeletal deformation and interpolation in the title and if so, what effect will it have on gameplay?
-We use a skeleton animation system for the characters in Red Faction. Skeletal animation allows us to have smooth transitions between animations, so you won't see any annoying popping. Our animation system allows for animations to be blended together smoothly, so you'll be able to see characters talking while standing, walking, crouching, etc. Skeletal animation doesn't have a direct effect on gameplay. It simply makes the animation look much better and more realistic. top
Q: Can we dismember a character's arm or leg?
-You can't blow people's limbs off nor can you decapitate people. If you shoot them in a specific area, they do a location-specific flinch though, often briefly reaching for that area in pain. top
Q: Will bodies clip into walls when they die like other first person shooters, most notably the Quake engine games?
-Yes, but it's not as noticeable as in something like Soldier of Fortune where it happens all the time. top
Q: Will corpses levitate over ledges and slopes jutting out at right angles not conforming to the ground?
-No, this does not really happen. Kill a guy on a slant and his feet won't be the only thing touching the ground like other games. top
Q: Is this a one shot in the toe and the guy is dead deal?
-There are weapons that will kill with one well-placed shot; a sniper rifle bullet to the foot won't kill anyone though, but one to the head will do it (even through glass ). Head shots and close encounters with explosions will account for the majority of one-shot kills. There's nothing in here like Rainbow 6/Rogue Spear, where you shoot a terrorist in the foot or elbow and he dies. top
Q: Will there be a parental control feature?
-The PS2 version is locked at one gore setting. The PC version should allow you to turn all blood off in the options menu and play completely gore free. top
Q: If you nail somebody with a rocket or other massive weapon, will they get gibbed?
-Not in the PS2 version, but presumably yes for the PC version as it was originally in there. top
Q: Is there only gibbing as a result of explosions, or will blasts throw characters and objects?
-Explosions will throw characters and objects (including glass, etc.) away from the blast. top
Q: How many death animations are there?
-There are twelve specific death animations not including flinch and pain animations. top
Q: Are there pain skins?
-Unfortunately, no. top
Q: Will corpses clip into other corpses?
-Yes, but this is hardly noticeable in actual play. top
Q: Is the gore level between the PS2 and PC versions different?
-Yes. It was said that the PS2 version was locked at a certain gore level while the PC version will have slightly more explicit violence, but don't expect SoF. top
Q: If you shoot a corpse will it twitch?
-No, but it will spray blood. top
Q: Will blasts throw corpses?
-No. top
Q: Are the animations slow and floaty like Goldeneye?
-No, the animations in Rf are actually very fast. Most of the time people fly back and go down with thuds. top
Q: Will blood decals fade with time?
Yes, technological limitations force limits on all manner of environmental decals including blood splats. top
Q: Can enemies bleed to death?
-No, enemies cannot bleed to death, nor can they become injured. They're either fine or dead. top
Q: Are there character physics like Hitman?
-Unfortunately not. top
Q: Will corpses fade with time?
-Yes. Unfortunately technological limitations put limits on how much crap can be on-screen at any given time. Once that limit is reached it's out with the old corpses and in with the new. top
Q: Will blood run down a wall?
-Nope, it splats and that's that. top
